He finished madrasah. Now he is forgetting the surahs he memorised.
It happens quietly. The classes end at eleven or twelve, school gets heavy, and by fifteen he has not opened a mushaf in a year. Nobody decided this. It just happened.

I built her foundation from Year 8 and taught her through to her GCSEs. Grades 7 to 9.
I also taught her brother. He is studying Biomedical Science. He has moved further out of London since, but he still comes to see me at Masjid Ibrahim to this day.

My student in Year 9 at Brampton gets grade 9s.
Grade 8s and 9s in his school assessments, across the board. Starting early is the reason. By Year 10 you are repairing. Before Year 9 you are building.
For the last two years I have taken him with me to pray jamaah at Masjid Ibrahim, so that he sees for himself that the salah is the most important thing in our life.
Still with me
He gives the adhan at his school now. He started with me in Year 5.
He is in Year 8 now. I have given the adhan at Jummah at Masjid Ibrahim for over five years, and he used to hear me do it every week. So we practised it together for a while, not because I set it as work, but because he wanted to. Then he put himself forward at his own school, and that part was his idea, not mine.
Grades are not the only thing that transfers out of a room like this, and they are not the only thing I am watching for.

Who is this for?
- He went to madrasah until Year 6 or Year 7, and then it stopped.
- He can still read Arabic, but he is slower than he was two years ago.
- The surahs he memorised for the mosque are going. Some are already gone.
- He is not rebelling. He is just busy, and nothing is holding the deen in place.
- And now GCSEs are on top of it, so there is no free evening to fix it with.
Every year I watch this happen to boys who were the best in their madrasah class at ten. There is nowhere for them to go at fourteen. The madrasah is full of small children. The mosque halaqah is for men. So they carry on without it, and the loss is slow enough that nobody notices until it is done.
So I built the thing that should exist for them.
One class. One cohort. Five students.

The same teacher, in the same room, for the whole year. The weekday hours get him his grades. The Saturday keeps his deen.
He does not join two things. He joins one thing. One teacher who knows what he is like in a maths lesson and what he is like reciting, and who notices when either one slips.
Never more than five students in the class. Every session stops for salah wherever it falls that week.

Imam Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari
The same Imam al-Bukhari of the Sahih. This is his separate collection on how a Muslim actually behaves, with his parents, with his neighbours, with the person serving him, with someone who has wronged him. Narration by narration, in English, from the beginning.
It is the right book for a fourteen year old. Not because it is easy, but because it is about the exact things he is deciding right now without anybody talking to him about them.

I am not a shaykh and I do not claim to be one. I am teaching a book I was taught, the way I was taught it, and I will tell your son plainly when a question is above me and needs to go to someone who knows.
I have taught Qur'an, tafsir and hadith for five years, and I have given the adhan at Jummah at Masjid Ibrahim for over five of them. That hour is the one thing on this page nobody else in Newham is offering you.

The going rate for a teacher who comes to the house round here is £15 to £20 an hour. £17.50 is the middle of it.
This one is the local rate, not a price published by a named centre, so I am telling you it is weaker evidence than the row above it. Online from Egypt is nearer £7 an hour, and that is real, but it is a screen rather than somebody in the room.

Redbridge Tuition, Seven Kings centre, £235 a month for three hours a week. The Qur'an figure is the typical in-person local rate. Yes, an online teacher from Egypt will do that hour for around £7. That is real and I am not going to pretend otherwise, but it is a screen, it is not somebody who sees your son every week, and it is not somebody who will notice when he stops turning up.
